About St. Louis River Estuary Wildlife Management Area

Located at the western tip of Lake Superior, straddling northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, the St. Louis River Estuary Wildlife Management Area (WMA) encompasses a critical freshwater estuarine ecosystem where the St. Louis River meets Lake Superior. Spanning thousands of acres of wetlands, marshes, riparian forests, and open water, this WMA supports a rich biodiversity including migratory waterfowl, fish species like salmon and trout, and numerous threatened or rare plants and animals. Historically, the estuary has been a hub for Native American communities and later important for commercial fishing and shipping. Today, the WMA serves as a vital conservation zone protecting habitat and water quality while offering visitors numerous recreation options. Key activities include birdwatching—especially during spring and fall migrations—paddling along scenic river corridors, and shoreline fishing. Several well-maintained trails provide access to scenic overlooks and diverse habitats, and boat launches allow access to the estuary’s waters. The St. Louis River Estuary is also recognized for its role in regional ecological restoration efforts, working to improve water quality and habitat connectivity. Visitors come to experience tranquil natural areas within reach of Duluth, Minnesota, and Superior, Wisconsin, making it an accessible outdoor destination rich in wildlife viewing and water-based recreation.
